Christmas Letdown?

Well, it’s over. Another Christmas is history. Your floor may still be littered with wrapping paper, boxes and lost toy parts and your fridge filled with Christmas dinner leftovers. Hopefully your day was filled with love and joy and created many happy memories to carry through the years.

But now it’s over…

On this day after Christmas, how do you feel?

Are you basking in the afterglow of a wonderful day? Are you resting up from a busy, fun-filled time with family and friends?

Or are you feeling let down?

Perhaps Christmas this year wasn’t what you hoped it would be. Maybe the kids have long abandoned that new toy they had to have, or the fancy new electronic gadget is already broken. Are you looking around at your house and wondering if you’ll ever get it clean?  Maybe you worked so hard to make it a perfect day that you didn’t enjoy the time you had. Or maybe it was such a wonderful day that you’re just disappointed that it’s over.

It’s very common to get through a highly anticipated event and then have a sense of let down. Whether it’s Christmas, a wedding, or some other special event the days following can often be difficult. We’ve spent weeks or months planning and picturing the events of the day and now we’re left with only memories. Sometimes we’re not sure what to do. Now that the magic of Christmas is through it’s easy to look ahead and see only the cold and dreary winter months in our future.

This year let’s try something different!

Let’s look ahead towards how we can carry Christmas with us throughout the coming year. Take a few minutes in the coming days to think about what kinds of things you and your family can do to bring the spirit of Christmas to others each month. Then make a plan:

1. Make a list of things you do for others at Christmas. Maybe add things you wanted to do this year but had to cut out due to lack of time or funds. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Bake cookies for your neighbors and co-workers.
  • Donate food to your local food pantry (they need food all year-long).
  • Buy a toy for the toy drive (perhaps a local day care center or church nursery could use a new toy?).
  • Instead of Christmas cards, send a card to family members or friends “just because”.
  • Visit a shut-in or nursing home.

2. Now take one item off the list and “assign” it to a month throughout the coming year. You can do the same thing more than one month! Get out your 2012 calendar and actually mark one day as “Christmas” that month. Plan for it and build excitement for the day in your family.

3. Share your ideas with us here so we can expand our own lists.

By looking ahead we can help ease our feelings of let down after the “big day”. Planning activities that bring joy to others can help keep excitement going through each month of the coming year for you and your family.

Let’s work together to make the whole year ahead exciting and carry the spirit of Christmas throughout the coming year!

Blessings and peace to you!

Even on the Darkest Day

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”  Matthew 5:14-16  NIV

It’s the first day of winter…the darkest day of the year. Today we will have the shortest amount of daylight of any other day. I’m glad it happens at Christmastime so that it doesn’t seem as dark. The lights all around brighten the darkest of days and nights. They add cheer to otherwise dreary surroundings.

What about you? Are you a light to others this time of the year? Do you brighten the days of those around you or are you a “Scrooge” – bah humbug-ing your way through the days until Christmas is over?

Jesus tells us that we are the light of the world. Just as we don’t turn a light on in our home and then cover it up, we should not hide the light of the Lord living in our lives.

So how is it that we let our light shine? Jesus tells us in vs. 16 that it is by allowing others to see your good works and praise our Father in heaven. When we do good things for others with the intent of having His light shine through us people will see it. And just as a light warms the area around it, you will warm your surroundings and the lives of those whom your light touches.

Now I know what you’re saying —  we all have a lot going on this time of the year and there’s just no time to make a difference for someone else. But there is time!

  • Time to hold the door open for the person coming into the store behind you…
  • Time to reach an item on a shelf or pick up something someone dropped…
  • Time to drop a few coins into the red kettle…
  • And there’s ALWAYS time to smile at a stranger!

God may be calling you to be a light in your world in some big and amazing way. And if He is you should do as He leads. But we shouldn’t wait for these big and amazing opportunities to let our lights shine. We should start each day asking Him how we can make a difference and light our world, then do every little thing He shows us.

And I’d love to hear of ways you follow His lead and light your world, or how someone else was a light in yours!

Blessings and peace to you as you spread His light to those around you!

Do You Believe?

This time of the year we see the word over and over:

Children are curious to believe in Santa Claus

People have permission to believe in miracles.

Everyone is enticed to believe that dreams do come true.

And all are allowed to believe that there is still good in the world.

This time of year there seems to be a magic in the air and a softening of even the hardest hearts. People seem more willing to believe. It can be a beautiful thing.

Believing at Christmas started over two thousand years ago with a young woman named Mary.

She had her life all planned out. Mary was engaged to be married and making preparations to begin her new life with Joseph. She probably dreamed of what their life would be like together, Joseph becoming a leader in their community and she raising the children and making a nice home for her family.

Mary’s dreams were interrupted one day by a visit from an angel telling her that she was soon going to have a baby. What? A baby? How could that be when she and Joseph were only engaged and had not been together inappropriately? What would this news mean for Mary? She would surely be divorced by Joseph, probably disowned by her family and cast out of her community. The news could have shattered her life.

But Mary responded differently. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38) Mary opened herself to God’s plans even though she didn’t understand and couldn’t piece together how this would affect her future. She believed in God’s plan for her and her future.

God knew before he entrusted Mary with the birth of His Son that she would respond this way. He knew that Mary would embrace what He asked of her and that he could depend on her to do her very best in whatever He asked of her. I love the words of Mary’s cousin Elizabeth as she saw Mary for the first time after the angel’s visit.

45 Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”  Luke 1:45

When I read this I had to wonder if this could be said about my life. Do I believe?

Do I believe in God’s plan for me?

Do I believe that even when things don’t go the way I thought they would that God is in control and will make everything work out for good?

And do I believe that when I know in my heart of hearts that God has made a promise to me that He will make it come true?

I believe…how ’bout you?

It’s never too late to believe that God has a perfect plan for you. And it’s never too late to believe that He will make that plan come true. It might not always happen the way you thought, but it will always be just right for you.

…and it doesn’t stop at Christmas. It’s true throughout the year!

blessings and peace to you this week before Christmas!

Ready To Give Up?

We live in such an instant society!  I think we often expect solutions to all our “issues” quickly.

Take for instance my recent decision to get serious about exercise, eating healthy and losing weight. This week I did well. I counted calories and stopped at the “right” number each day. I exercised most days, and some days twice! I drank more water and tried to get more sleep. So today when I headed toward the scale I actually wasn’t dreading it. I stepped on, waited….

for nothing!

There was a 0 where I expected to see a minus sign. All that work, and nothing to show for it! I was ready to give up, throw in the towel and find myself a hot fudge sundae! It was clear I couldn’t make this work!

Before the real wallowing began I stopped and gave this some serious thought. I wasn’t really thinking about what I could have done differently this week, but about my reaction to the outcome. Just because what I saw on the scale wasn’t what I wanted doesn’t mean I failed this week.

This week I learned things about myself and my habits that I didn’t realize before. I made progress in setting an exercise schedule, and began to think differently about food. The problem isn’t what I did all week as much as in my expectations.

We are so used to instant contact via e-mail or cell phone, instant food via drive-through or microwave, instantly watching any program we want via internet or digital cable and so on. I think perhaps we also tend to expect instant change and instant solutions to all of our problems. We forget that learning something new takes time and practice.

Think of athletes, musicians, or chefs whom you admire for their abilities.Look up their biographies and learn what it took for them to get to where they are today. I guarantee it wasn’t instant, but their passion for what they were looking toward was strong enough that they didn’t give up. They kept at it, no matter how long it took.

We won’t find instant success either. We will have times when we feel we aren’t making progress and probably times when we take steps backwards. But this doesn’t mean we are failures, simply that we are learning. And giving up won’t get us any closer to what we’re after. Keeping at it will.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1b-2

Even Jesus had to endure 30 years of life on earth and then the shame of the cross before He could reach His Heavenly destination. He made it and so will we, if we don’t give up!

So whatever you’re facing today, whatever your race is, keep at it. Keep going, and keep your eyes on Jesus. He will give you the strength and the wisdom you need not only to finish, but to win!

blessings and peace to you today!

Seeking Perfection

Another long day has finally come to an end. You lay your head on the pillow and think, “Today was such an amazing day. I have such a perfect life!”. What? Not your average day? Maybe you can’t remember the last time you had that thought.

Some of you believe your life is so far from perfect that you’ll never see perfection in your lifetime.

But maybe I can help you see it a little differently.

Most of us would define perfection as follows:

a: being entirely without fault or defect :flawless <a perfect diamond>

b: satisfying all requirements :accurate

These definitions are certainly accurate and I would agree that they are impossible to achieve in our earthly lives. We can’t satisfy all the requirements that each day holds, and living in a sinful world we can’t possibly be flawless. But there’s another definition that caught my eye:

d : faithfully reproducing the original; specifically : letter-perfect

Now THAT is reachable perfection, even in our earthly lives! For we have a perfect example to follow and emulate. When Jesus Christ left a perfect Heaven and came to earth to live as a man He faced stuggles just like ours and never sinned. As we faithfully follow Jesus we also become perfect.

We also have promises from God’s word:

Hebrews 10:5 tells us: “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”

When we allow Christ to work through us we have His promise that we are perfect. In His eyes we are already perfect as we trust in Him and allow Him to make us holy.

James 1:17 tells us: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

The perfection God promises us doesn’t mean that every day will be a great day by earthly standards.

The perfection God promises doesn’t mean that we won’t struggle.

But the perfection God promises means that when we lay our heads on the pillow each night we can be satisfied that in His eyes we are already perfect.

And that’s a peace we all can use at the end of another long day.

blessings!

Full, Empty…or Running Over?

I started out life as a glass “half full” person. I looked for the good in everything and chose to see the positive over the negative. As I put more and more years behind me I began to get bogged down by all that I experienced and I started to view the glass as “half empty”.  I looked at what I saw around me and what I was able to do in my own strength instead of having the faith to see how God could work in the situation.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”- Hebrews 11:6 NIV

Too often we think that we are not ‘worthy’ of God’s blessings. We have to work so hard for everything else in our lives that we may believe working hard and being ‘deserving’ is necessary to receive good gifts from God. Reading this verse from Hebrews, I often stopped my brain after the first 9 words, seeing only that I had to work hard at faith in order to please God. The reality is that all God requires is our faith in Him, and for us to “earnestly and diligently seek Him”. It is a promise from God, not a rule!

In her book “Battlefield of the Mind”, Joyce Meyer says:
This powerful Scripture says that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. I rejoiced when I finally saw this! I know I have made many mistakes in the past, but I also know that I have diligently sought the Lord with all my heart. That means that I qualify for rewards. i decided a long time ago that I would receive any blessing that God wanted to give me.

When we choose to focus on the negative, challenging things in life instead of the positive, good gifts God offers we are essentially throwing His gifts back in His face, telling Him we don’t want them. But when we approach each day looking for blessings we will ALWAYS find them. Not only will we see our glasses as half full, but as running over with goodness and blessings!

It may sound king of silly, but every day can be like a treasure hunt…finding good gifts from God throughout the day. And that’s much better than only finding the challenges in each day! And who knows, maybe the treasure will be cookies to go with our glass overflowing!!

milk and cookies

I hope you’ll join me and hunt for treasures each day. If too many of them end without cookies, let me know…I’ll send you some of mine!!

blessings to you!

The Rewards of Sacrifice

What are you willing to do for God? Many of us would be quick to say we would do anything. We would serve the hungry, help build homes for the homeless and perhaps even travel to the ends of the earth. But how much are we truly willing to give up?

Abraham was a man who loved God with all his heart and was given the promise that he would father many nations. Abraham was faithful throughout his life, but still had to wait 100 years for the promise of a son to be fulfilled. We can only guess at Abraham’s elation and joy at the birth of his son. The love and pride he felt must have made him want to burst, and I imagine he immediately began making plans for who he hoped his son would become. As Isaac grew Abraham soon learned that his time of trusting was not over.

Then God said, `Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. The he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.                                                                Genesis 22:2,9-10 NIV

God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son – to give up the fulfillment of his promise in order to prove his love for the Lord. I can’t count the number of times I’ve asked myself why God would ask something so unthinkable of a man who was so faithful to Him.  It is often difficult to understand why the Lord requires from us things that we don’t understand, even things that seem downright cruel.

But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”  “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.                                       Genesis 22:11-12 NIV

Abraham and Isaac’s story has a happy ending. God provided a ram for the sacrifice, and Isaac lived to tell of God’s provision.

As I read the story of Abraham and Isaac I am compelled to ask myself, “What is the Lord requiring me to sacrifice?”

Is it my independence?

My pride?

Is it the desire for my dream job?

To grow old with a Godly man who loves me almost as much as he loves the Lord?

What is He asking you to lay down for Him?

No matter what God calls us to sacrifice, we must be willing to give it up; to lay it down on the altar in front of my Lord and slay it…proclaiming that even our most precious possessions on earth or our strongest desire is not stronger than our love for God and the choice to obey Him regardless of the cost.

Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.                                                                              Psalm 37:4 NIV

This promise came generations after Abraham’s faithfulness, but I believe is still true for us today. When we delight ourselves in Him our desires will align with God’s and we will be blessed by them. We may find our desires remain the same as they have been for years or they may change. But we can cling to God’s promises and know that our faithfulness and sacrifice will be rewarded. No matter what the outcome we must focus on God and our faithfulness to Him, not on the reward waiting for us some day.

This promise gives me peace in the puzzle of life. I hope you find that peace today as well.

blessings and peace to you…

Awe & Wonder

This Monday morning on my drive to work my mind was all over the place. I wondered where the school bus was that’s usually in front of me, anticipated what was in store for me at work and questioned whether or not I could finish mowing the lawn when I got home. Somewhat distracted, I rounded a curve and gasped in awe!

Suspended above me was a hot air balloon, gracefully gliding in the sky.  Turning my head to the left I was awe-struck again by two more balloons, one on its way down. I was thrilled! As I glanced to my right, two more balloons appeared! I could hardly believe my eyes.

What a wonderful beginning to my morning! The thoughts in my head changed from the worries and cares of the day ahead to rejoicing and thanking God for this special “lift” on a Monday morning. I began to concentrate on praising the Lord for my blessings and praying for friends, family and even strangers and what they were facing in life. Truly a weight was lifted and my heart began to float like the balloons I left behind.

As my car began its ascent into the hills where I work I was suddenly filled with wonder. Over the weekend God had used His paintbrush on the trees all around me.

As the sun danced on the leaves I was at a loss for words. I attempted to cry out to God in thanks for the beauty around me, but was truly awestruck at the wonder of His glorious creation and the fact that He put it all there for ME!

I was reminded of the Psalmist’s reflection on the awe and wonder of the Lord:

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.              – Psalm 19:1-4 NIV

On days like Monday it is easy to worship God. But some days it’s not. Some days I’m hurried, harried, or just going through the motions of life. I see no awe or wonder when life feels monotonous and I’m struggling to get through the day, physically, mentally or emotionally.

It’s not that the awe and wonder aren’t there.

It’s just that I’m too self-centered to look around me and see it.

In his book “Crazy Love” Francis Chan gives a similar perspective:

“It may sound ‘un-Christian’ to say that on some mornings I don’t feel like loving God, or I just forget to. But I do. In our world, where hundreds of things distract us from God, we have to intentionally and consistently remind ourselves of Him.”

I agree with Francis that this is the key. I am committing to swim against the tide of apathy and ordinary and wake up to the wonder around me.  I have promised God that I will be more intentional in looking for areas of awe and wonder.

Every day is filled with awe…we just need to allow ourselves to see it.

Wonder is all around us. I wonder why we so often miss it.

Peace in my life’s puzzle includes finding awe and wonder in each day, and remembering to give credit to the God who created it. I wonder if you’ll look closer too.

Blessings and peace to you…

Incredible Delight

Delight:
  • a high degree of gratification : joy; also : extreme satisfaction
  • something that gives great pleasure <her performance was a delight>
  • archaic : the power of affording pleasure            (www.merriam-webster.com)

What brings delight to your life?

   Your children?

A cup of coffee with a good friend?

       Watching your favorite sporting event?

Walking through the woods, along a beach, or some other beautiful place?

Do you know what brings delight to God?

YOU!!!

The Lord your God is with you,
He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with his love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.
                                      Zephaniah 3:17 NIV

This can be hard to grasp. The God of the universe, the Creator of the world and all that is in it delights in YOU, and in me, and in each person who loves Him and seeks to do His will.

He promises it in His word, and all we have to do is believe and accept His delight, and then live in it.

I’m praying that each of you will find your peace in life’s puzzle today as you delight in the Lord and receive His delight in you.

blessings!

Take EVERY Thought Captive?

Winnie The Pooh once asked, “Did you ever stop to think and forget to start again?” I don’t seem to have that problem. I seem to think constantly and sometimes it’s overwhelming. Occasionally I even wake myself up in the night thinking. I weigh options and mull things over, not wanting to settle for something less than the best. I’m not often spontaneous, I’m much more of a “routine” person. I will admit that at times this has more cons than pros, but that’s the way I’m programmed.

I was mowing lawn today and surprise! I got to thinking. The lawn mower is an ideal thinking spot as there isn’t much else to do whilst riding along making beautiful rows of freshly mown grass. Anyway as I was thinking I began wishing there was a device that would record what I was thinking it while I was thinking it so I wouldn’t lose my deliberations after hours on the mower.

As I was dreaming about my special thought capturing device it hit me. What if this device captured every thought I was thinking…all the time? If I couldn’t turn my thought snatcher off and on, how would I feel about what it captured? How often are my thoughts unkind, unruly and un-Christlike? And what if others could access the thoughts on my device? Would I be embarrassed by what they encountered?

Paul encourages us in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to

“demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the

knowledge of God, and take captive every thought

to make it obedient to Christ.”

This challenge is posed to every believer. What we think really does matter. We may not have a machine that records our thoughts, but we do have a Father and Creator who sees our hearts and hears our thoughts. Whether or not they are Godly matters to Him and it should matter to us. Our thoughts about strangers matter just as much to Him as thoughts about our friends and family. When we take our thoughts captive we make them matter to us as well. Deciding if they are pleasing to God and making the choice to stop thinking those that are not is a discipline that we learn by drawing closer to God through scripture, prayer and examining the life of Christ. Becoming more like Him inside and out is the ultimate joy in life and brings everlasting peace.

So as I thought some more about my thought snatching device I realized that I have some work to do before I want all of my thoughts captured…at least externally. I will have to keep working on taking my thoughts captive.

And for now I’ll stick to paper and pencil!

blessings and peace to you!
