Seasons of Change

Yesterday morning as the darkness lifted and light broke through, it revealed the ultimate sign that Summer has crossed to Autumn, and the growing season in my little corner of the world is over for another year. Not only did it frost, we had a hard freeze. 28 degrees is not the number I had on my bingo card as the temperature to begin my Sunday! Now, this is not unexpected, nor unwarranted. Mid-October brings these changes every year. That doesn’t mean it’s not an adjustment!

Many people welcome October and its Autum weather with open arms and a sigh of relief that Summer is over. They prefer the crisp cool (cold) air and the opportunity to wear hoodies and flannels over the heat and sunshine. For others, this is a season of struggle, of longing and holding out hope for one more day in the 70’s.

October brings many changes that are lovely and remind us of the beauty in the world God created. The colors of the leaves and glorious mums, the bright orange of the pumpkins that dot the landscape and appear at roadside stands are all welcome sights. There is a certain scent that comes with the Autumn as well, maybe due to the crisp air, and the smoke of campfires and wood stoves. And oh, the tastes of Autumn! Apple cider, fresh cider or pumpkin donuts, and the comfort of chili, beef stew, and other comfort foods we don’t seem to make when the weather is warm are like old friends returning.

Maybe the change of seasons is not so bad after all.

One challenge for me that can come with the changing seasons is looking too far into the future. When the leaves start to change and the air begins to chill, my mind jumps to January and the cold we will encounter. I have spent many years not enjoying Autum because I only see it as a gateway to Winter. I jump over the wonder and begin to worry. Instead of enjoying and embracing each day I miss the blessings they hold.

How many times do we do something similar when we begin to see other changes in our lives? When roles change at work we might jump to the worry that we are being phased out. When we see things shift in our relationship circle we may wonder if we are still loved and needed. We see our children and grandchildren grow and become more independent and worry they will leave us behind. And as our bodies and brains adjust to the aging process we may feel like we are failing ourselves and others because our capacity to achieve isn’t what it used to be.

Although the first chill of Autumn, the shift in relationships and our life’s roles may come as a surprise to us, they are not to God. He reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 that life is a series of changes and appointed times. He also admonishes us in Matthew 6:25-34 to not worry about tomorrow, what we will eat, drink, or wear, but allow the Lord to take care of us – seeking His kingdom first!

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34

I’m choosing to enjoy Autum this year and let “Old Man Winter” come when it may. I’m going to soak up every bit of beauty and joy I can through these months of color, and relish every moment with family and friends, not worrying about what the future holds for any circumstances or relationships. I’m also going to spend time thanking God for all these things, knowing He has it all in His good plan.

Won’t you join me?

Falling for Fall

Fall is a challenging time for me.

You see, I love Summer.

Oh, Spring is nice. It’s exciting to watch the world wake up. It’s great to rediscover relationships with neighbors and friends whom we only saw from beneath our hats and scarves while operating snowblowers or shovels. I enjoy planting flowers and seeds, digging in the dirt and watching things begin to bloom.

But Summer. Ahhh…the sun shines down it’s warmth and life is more relaxed somehow. People look for excuses to spend time together. Friendships are made or strengthened around picnic tables, bonfires, or lounging on the back deck. Fairs, Festivals and Farmer’s Markets are everywhere. I love Summer.
So as the leaves begin to change and temperatures begin to cool I begin to panic.

This year I wondered what stirs up these feelings in me. After all, there is much about Fall I am fond of.

The colors are brilliant.

The scents are delicious.

The flavors of pumpkin, apples and spice are wonderful.

Why the melancholy?

I began to realize that in my mind I have been skipping over Fall and worrying about Winter.

And then a verse came to mind:

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.        Matthew 6:34

Instead of enjoying the fun of Fall every year I dread the cold weather and snow (both of which I am not fond) that are ahead. I worry about something months away so I don’t enjoy the beauty all around me.

I realized I do this in my personal life as well.

Sometimes I worry about problems in life that may never materialize and I begin to despair. By looking ahead at what challenges may present themselves in the future I am pulled away from the blessings of today.

And it steals my peace.

This year I’m working on enjoying the beauty of the changing colors and the crunch of the leaves under my feet. I’m breathing in the sweet smells and relishing the special flavors that are only available this time of year.

And I’m not worrying about the “s” word right now. The ground will be white soon enough. I don’t need to rush it. Who knows, perhaps this year I can find something to enjoy about Winter as well.

What is your favorite season?

Do you share similar struggles with the changing seasons?

Blessings and peace to you this beautiful Fall day…

Autumn Comfort

There’s a chill in the air where I live in Central New York State. The beauty of fall surrounds us as the foliage treats us to a kaleidoscope of color. Neighborhood lawns and porches are dotted with pumpkins and colorful mums. Ovens are filled with apple pies and pots of chili simmer on stovetops. As the first hard freeze of the season hit last night minds turn to comfort – comfort foods, cozy blankets and a cup of something warm. I joke that it’s time to hibernate as my thoughts change from outside activities to those inside.

Many people love this time of year as temperatures drop and sweatshirts come out of the closet. But even they will cozy up to a fire and enjoy the comfort of a warm bowl of soup or chili.

What happens when the comfort of earth is not enough for us? What happens when the sadness or chill in our hearts and spirits can’t be warmed by a blanket? Are you experiencing a time in your life that is overwhelming you and the things and people can’t provide enough comfort?

Perhaps it’s not you but someone close to you who needs comfort. You’ve tried everything but you can’t help.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,so also our comfort abounds through Christ.                                                             2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Although we can’t see Him, God is all around us. Some say we can’t feel Him either, but if you ask He will truly hold you close, comforting your spirit in a way nothing on earth can.

Do you know this God of comfort? Even if you don’t need Him today I believe there will be a time when you will. If you have questions about getting to know Him please ask.

What are your favorite comforts of Autumn? Apple cider, a cozy fire? I’d love to hear about them. Maybe you have a favorite others have never tried or heard of. I’ve listed one of my favorites below. It’s my grandma’s apple squares. Maybe I’ll make some today.
